Renters must be at least 25 years old with a valid driver’s license — the same requirement that’s in our rental agreement.

The $1,603/week flat rate (plus tax) includes the 4WD vehicle of your choice, a tire deflator, portable air compressor, shovel, and recovery equipment, the seasonal Currituck County beach parking permit and a Cape Hatteras National Seashore ORV permit, and airport pickup at Norfolk International. No mandatory add-ons and no counter upsells — and no upcharge for choosing a full-size 4WD SUV over a Wrangler.

Airport rentals are one flat rate — $1,603 covers up to 7 days on any vehicle in the fleet, whether you take five days or all seven. Five-day minimum. Pickup and return can happen any day to match your travel schedule.

We accept all major credit cards — Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover. A standard security deposit hold will be placed on your card at pickup to cover incidentals, tolls, or damage.

Reservations cancelled more than 72 hours before the rental receive a full refund minus a $25 processing fee. Cancellations made within 72 hours of the rental are charged a $300 cancellation fee. The cancellation policy shown in the Fleetwire checkout at the time of booking is the controlling policy.

Not currently. All vehicles must be picked up and returned to our Norfolk International Airport (ORF) location to ensure availability for the next guest.

We keep four vehicles for your ORF 4WD rental: the Jeep Wrangler and the Jeep Gladiator (seats 5 — the iconic open-air OBX beach 4x4s), plus two full-size 4WD SUVs, the Infiniti QX80 and the Nissan Armada (seats up to 8 with three rows for larger families). All vehicles are beach-permitted with Carova passes and recovery gear included.

The Jeep Wrangler 4WD rental seats 5 and is the iconic open-air Outer Banks beach 4x4 — with a soft top that folds back for the full open-air beach experience. The full-size 4WD SUV rental seats up to 8 with three rows and serious cargo space — ideal for larger families and longer OBX vacations. Both are beach-permitted and prepped the same way.

All of our vehicles are automatic transmission.

Yes — all of our vehicles are registered street vehicles and fully capable on pavement. You’ll drive from the airport on regular roads before heading to the beach.

On our Jeeps, 4WD is engaged by pulling the short transfer case shifter straight back. Our larger SUVs have a 4WD selector button on the dash. Engage the vehicle-specific 4WD setting described in your pickup instructions — the correct setting varies by vehicle, so follow the guidance for the one you are driving. Vehicle-specific 4WD instructions and a short demonstration video are sent before pickup — and Bret is a phone call away if questions come up.

No. Each rental includes the seasonal Currituck County beach parking permit for parking on the Corolla/Carova 4WD beach, plus a Cape Hatteras National Seashore ORV permit for designated open routes — already covered in your flat rate. The Currituck pass is a beach parking permit, not a permit required merely to drive through the 4WD area, and a true 4WD vehicle is required for Carova access. Cape Hatteras route availability changes with posted and seasonal closures, and the included passes do not override local rules or closures. Some municipalities may have separate seasonal rules or local permits; always check current local regulations for your specific destination.

Yes. Our fleet is specifically prepared and maintained for the soft sand of the Outer Banks beaches, and beach driving on designated routes is approved under our rental agreement. Major airport rental agreements commonly prohibit off-road, beach, or unpaved-surface use. Always check the rental agreement before driving on sand.

A tire gauge, rapid deflator, and compressor are provided — air down to approximately 18–20 PSI when conditions require, then reinflate to the pressure shown on that vehicle’s driver-door placard before highway driving.

Yes. Your 4WD is capable on any permitted beach. Cape Hatteras National Seashore requires its own pass (included in your rental). Other municipalities like Nags Head or Kill Devil Hills require locally purchased permits. Always check current local regulations.

There are no official restrictions, but it is highly recommended to drive near low tide when the sand is hard-packed. Never drive in the wet salt wash where waves run up the beach — it causes severe vehicle damage.

Don’t spin your tires — it only digs you deeper. Stop, lower your tire pressure a little further, clear sand from in front of the wheels, and try reversing slowly in your own tracks. If that does not free the vehicle, call us first at (252) 564-4218 before attempting any recovery. Recovery gear should only be used if you have been given proper instructions for it — an improperly rigged strap recovery can injure people and damage vehicles. Note that the renter is responsible for any professional towing fees.

Yes! The Cape Hatteras beach driving pass included with your rental covers Ocracoke Island, so you can take your Jeep on the ferry and explore.

The wild Colonial Spanish Mustangs roam the 4x4 beaches of Carova, approximately 30–40 minutes north of the Corolla 4WD access ramp. We provide safety information about wildlife to help you observe them responsibly.

Night driving rules vary by location. It is generally permitted in Carova but check current seasonal regulations before driving after dark.

No. We do not sell in-house insurance. Your personal liability, collision, and comprehensive auto policy is what we require.

No. Credit card benefits vary widely between cards and commonly exclude off-road and sand driving. You need a personal auto policy that extends to rental vehicles.

If your personal policy does not extend to rental vehicles, we will not be able to rent to you. We do not accept standalone rental policies or non-owner policies in place of qualifying personal coverage. Check with your agent before you book.

The renter is fully responsible for any damage to the vehicle during the rental period, including the insurance deductible.

Our pickup is 100% contactless. Your vehicle will be waiting in the Norfolk International Airport (ORF) parking garage. After completing digital check-in, you’ll receive the exact garage location and a digital key code. No lines, no counter — go straight from baggage claim to your waiting 4WD.

Yes! Pets are welcome at no extra charge. We ask that you bring a blanket or seat cover for your furry co-pilot and ensure they’re secure during driving.

Rules vary by town. Duck allows properly controlled dogs off-leash on the town beach. Carova and the rest of the Currituck 4WD beaches require a leash at all times. Kitty Hawk requires a 6 ft leash from 10 AM to 6 PM between the Friday before Memorial Day and the day after Labor Day, and a 12 ft retractable leash the rest of the year. Nags Head requires a leash (10 ft) year-round. Kill Devil Hills bans dogs on the beach from 9 AM–6 PM between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

The vehicle is supplied with a full tank and must be returned full by your scheduled drop-off time. Under the rental agreement, a $100 fuel charge applies if the vehicle is returned with less fuel than when it was rented.

Carova Beach is the northernmost community on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, situated just south of the Virginia state line. The name Carova is a portmanteau of Carolina and Virginia. It is completely off the grid — there are no paved roads. The only access is by driving directly on the beach.

Yes, absolutely. There are no paved roads to or within Carova — 4WD is required. Our Jeeps are specifically equipped to handle the deep, soft sand of the northern beaches.

Yes! Carova Beach is famous for the wild Spanish mustangs that roam freely. We provide safety information about wildlife to help you observe them responsibly from a safe distance (50 feet minimum, by NC law).

Carova has no paved public road connection, gas station, grocery store, or conventional commercial district. Traffic and beach activity can still be heavy during peak summer arrival periods, so bring fuel, food, water, and other supplies before entering the 4WD area.

Norfolk International Airport (ORF) is the closest major commercial airport, exactly 80 miles from Kitty Hawk. Drive time is typically 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on your destination.

Norfolk International is served by major and regional carriers with direct and connecting service from many U.S. markets. Airline service changes over time — check flyorf.com for the current route list.

Alternatives include Newport News/Williamsburg (PHF) at 110 miles, Coastal Carolina Regional (EWN) at 130 miles, and Raleigh-Durham (RDU) at 192 miles. Online booking covers Norfolk International pickup; Chesapeake Regional (CPK) and Currituck County Regional (ONX) pickups may be possible by arrangement — call to check before you book.

Navigation varies by vehicle. Most vehicles support Apple CarPlay or Android Auto so you can use your phone’s maps, and some include a built-in navigation system. We also provide written directions to the beach access ramps. Ask us about the assigned vehicle if built-in navigation matters for your trip.

Yes. Your Cape Hatteras National Seashore ORV pass (included with every rental) covers beach driving on Hatteras Island and Ocracoke. Hatteras is roughly 140 miles from ORF (about 3 to 3.5 hours), and Ocracoke is 170+ miles including the ferry crossing from Hatteras Village. The car ferry to Ocracoke accepts our Jeeps without issue.

From Norfolk International (ORF): Kitty Hawk is 80 miles (1.5–2 hours), Kill Devil Hills is 82 miles (1.5–2 hours), Nags Head is 85 miles (1.75–2 hours), Duck is 85 miles (2 hours), Corolla is 96 miles (2–2.5 hours), Carova 4x4 beach is 105 miles (2–2.5 hours, 4WD required for the final stretch), Manteo is 95 miles (2–2.25 hours), Hatteras Island reaches Buxton at 140 miles (3–3.5 hours), and Ocracoke is 170+ miles including the ferry (5+ hours total).

Outer Banks beach driving falls outside the coverage limits of most credit card rental insurance and many basic auto policies — they exclude off-road use, sand driving, and recovery costs. We require renters to carry their own liability, collision, and comprehensive auto policy that explicitly extends to rental vehicles, ensuring you are properly protected for soft-sand driving, salt exposure, and any beach recovery scenario.
