Full-Size SUV Rental FAQs

How many people fit in the full-size 4WD SUV?

Three rows of seating fit up to 7-8 passengers with real cargo space behind the back row.

Is the full-size SUV beach-approved like the Wrangler?

Yes. Same prep — true 4WD, sand-ready tires, recovery gear, and both Currituck and Cape Hatteras ORV permits included.

What does a full-size SUV rental cost?

Weekly rates start at $1,338 — the same flat rate as our Wrangler. Beach permits, recovery gear, and airport pickup are all included with no surprise counter fees.

Why pick the SUV over the Wrangler?

Bigger groups, more luggage, kids in car seats, longer stays where you want the extra cargo room and a quieter ride.

Where do I pick up the SUV?

Same as all our vehicles — at Norfolk International Airport (ORF), no off-airport counter.

What’s included with the SUV rental?

Both OBX beach permits, recovery gear, sand-pickup directions to Carova, and local OBX support.

Can you rent a 4×4 SUV for the Outer Banks?

Yes — our full-size 4WD SUVs are true 4×4 vehicles built and permitted for the sand-only beaches of Corolla and Carova. Each one comes beach-prepped with the right tires, recovery gear, and ORV permits, and you pick it up right at Norfolk International Airport (ORF).

What is the difference between an all-wheel-drive SUV and a 4WD SUV for beach driving?

For the soft sand of the Outer Banks 4×4 beaches you want a true four-wheel-drive (4WD) SUV with low-range capability and good ground clearance, not a standard all-wheel-drive crossover. AWD crossovers can dig in and get stuck in deep sand, which is why our fleet is genuine 4WD rated for sand and comes with recovery gear and a 12V air compressor — you air the tires down to about 18–20 PSI at the beach access ramp, then re-inflate before getting back on pavement.

Can I drive a regular rental car on the Outer Banks beach?

No. Standard rental cars from airport chains are two-wheel-drive and almost always prohibit beach driving, and you’d risk getting stuck and voiding the rental agreement. A beach-permitted 4WD SUV from a local specialist is the legal, safe way to drive onto the Corolla and Carova sand.

Where can I rent a 4WD SUV near Norfolk Airport for an Outer Banks trip?

You can pick up a beach-ready 4WD SUV directly at Norfolk International Airport (ORF), the closest major airport to the northern Outer Banks. There’s no off-airport shuttle or second counter — fly in, pick up your sand-ready SUV at the terminal, and drive about two hours south to the beach.

Why Choose a Full-Size 4WD SUV for the Outer Banks?

A full-size 4WD SUV offers capabilities beyond what most OBX travelers expect. Unlike compact SUVs or passenger cars — which cannot legally drive on Outer Banks beaches — a true four-wheel-drive SUV with high clearance handles the 4–8 miles of soft sand from Corolla to Carova with confidence. The real advantage over a Jeep Wrangler shows when you’re traveling with extended family, carrying multiple children’s car seats, or bringing a full week’s worth of gear for 6–8 people.

The Currituck County ORV corridor and the Cape Hatteras National Seashore ORV permits — both included with your rental — authorize your vehicle for beach driving across both major OBX beach access zones. You’re not limited to paved roads or resort parking. With a full-size 4WD, your OBX trip can include wild horse watching in Carova, private oceanfront beach parking near your vacation rental, and remote Cape Hatteras fishing spots only reachable by sand.

Norfolk Airport Pickup — No Shuttle, No Wait

Your full-size 4WD SUV is waiting in the Norfolk International Airport parking garage when your flight lands. Walk from baggage claim directly to your vehicle — no shuttle ride to an off-site lot, no counter to stand in, no paperwork to sign on arrival. We handle everything in advance so your OBX vacation starts the moment you land at ORF.

Pickup works any day your flight arrives. Whether your vacation rental checks in on a Saturday, a Wednesday, or a Sunday, your 4WD is ready when you are. Our 7-day minimum rental runs from the day you arrive at ORF through the day before your return flight.

What to Expect on Your First OBX Beach Drive

If you’ve never driven on an OBX beach before, here’s what to expect: you’ll reach the Corolla 4WD access ramp at the north end of Ocean Trail Drive, engage 4-wheel drive (4H is typically sufficient for most beach corridors), deflate your tires to approximately 18–20 PSI, and proceed north on the beach. The sand immediately north of the ramp can be the softest, so drive confidently and keep moving. Once you’re in a rhythm, beach driving is incredibly rewarding — open horizon, waves, and wild horses in the distance.

Before you return to pavement, re-inflate your tires using a portable compressor. We recommend carrying a 12V compressor in the vehicle throughout your trip. Driving on pavement with significantly deflated tires causes rapid wear and can be unsafe.

Booking Your Full-Size 4WD SUV

Availability for our full-size 4WD SUV is limited — we don’t run a fleet of dozens of vehicles, which means you’ll always get a personally prepared, beach-ready vehicle rather than whatever’s left on the lot. We recommend booking 3–6 months in advance for June and July dates, and 1–2 months ahead for spring and fall trips.
