It is also the closest airport to Carova Beach, the 4x4-only stretch of sand north of Corolla where NC 12 ends and the last few miles are beach driving. Nothing with airline service is closer. The small airfields on the Outer Banks itself are general-aviation strips with no commercial flights, and every other commercial airport adds an hour or more of driving.

Norfolk (ORF) to Corolla: distance, drive time and the route
Corolla sits at the north end of the paved Outer Banks, and there is no bridge to it from the Currituck County mainland, so every airport is farther than the map suggests. From ORF the drive is about 96 miles: I-64 east to VA 168 south, the Chesapeake Expressway (a toll road), which becomes NC 168 at the state line and feeds into US 158. US 158 crosses the Wright Memorial Bridge into Kitty Hawk, and NC 12 runs the last 20-some miles north through Southern Shores and Duck to Corolla. Plan on 2 to 2.5 hours; summer Saturday check-in traffic on the bridge and on NC 12 through Duck adds to that.
With an ORF Jeep Rental the trip splits in two: a transfer vehicle waits in the airport garage, the drive to the Kitty Hawk pickup, the first right after the Wright Memorial Bridge, is about 77 miles and roughly 1 hour 35 minutes, and after you swap into your 4x4 Corolla is about 35 minutes more. Closest airport to Carova Beach: same answer, plus the sand
Carova has no paved road, so the closest airport to Carova Beach is still Norfolk, at roughly 105 miles including the beach leg. NC 12 ends at a ramp north of Corolla; from there about 11 miles of beach run to the fence at the Virginia line, and the communities on it (Penny’s Hill, Swan Beach, North Swan Beach and Carova Beach) are strung out along that sand. Most Carova rental homes are 4 to 8 miles up the beach, and Carova Beach itself, the farthest north, is 7 to 11 miles from the ramp. You cannot come down from Virginia Beach: the beach through Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge is closed to vehicles.
Count on 2.5 to 3 hours from the airport to a Carova house, and on a true four-wheel-drive vehicle with the tires aired down for the last stretch. Two things trip people up on that list. First, there is no airport in Corolla, Duck or anywhere on the Currituck Outer Banks; the nearest runway by road is First Flight, the 3,000-foot National Park Service strip beside the Wright Brothers monument in Kill Devil Hills, and it has no fuel and no airline service. Second, Currituck County Regional in Maple looks close on a map, but the Mid-Currituck Bridge has never been built, so the drive from that airport to Corolla loops south on NC 168 and US 158 to the Wright Memorial Bridge and back up NC 12. Why ORF wins for the northern Outer Banks
- Shortest drive. ORF is the only major airport within about 100 miles of Corolla; Raleigh-Durham is roughly twice the driving time.
- Real flight competition. Several major airlines fly into Norfolk, which usually means better fares and more nonstops than the smaller fields.
- One road, no ferry. The route is a highway the whole way; Corolla and Carova are reached by US 158 and NC 12, never by ferry.
- A 4x4 on the ground. Norfolk is the one airport where a transfer vehicle is waiting in the garage with a beach-ready 4WD on the Outer Banks at the other end, so a Carova house or a day with the wild horses does not depend on the counter car you happen to be handed. Corolla itself is paved and any car will do for the lighthouse, the shops and the beach accesses. The 4x4 beach starts where NC 12 ends. No permit is needed to drive it, but Currituck County requires a beach parking permit to park on the sand from the second Saturday of May through the last Saturday of September; ours is on the vehicle.
