🚙 Booking & Reservations
What do I need to secure my reservation?
Proof of a full-coverage personal auto insurance policy is required to book. You can email or upload a photo of your insurance card during the digital check-in process. Once received, your reservation is confirmed.
What is included in the flat rate?
The $1,338/week flat rate includes the 4WD vehicle of your choice, standard GPS capability, a rapid tire deflator and heavy-duty air compressor, a kinetic recovery strap, beach driving and parking passes for Corolla and Cape Hatteras National Seashore, and airport pickup at Norfolk International. No hidden fees — no upcharge for choosing a Gladiator or full-size SUV over a Wrangler.
Is there a minimum rental period?
Yes. We require a 7-day minimum, which matches a typical OBX vacation week, but pickup and return can happen any day.
What forms of payment do you accept?
We accept all major credit cards — Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover. A standard security deposit hold will be placed on your card at pickup to cover incidentals, tolls, or damage.
What is your cancellation policy?
We offer flexible cancellation. You can cancel for a full refund up to 14 days before your scheduled pickup. Cancellations made within 14 days may be subject to a cancellation fee.
Do you allow one-way rentals?
Not currently. All vehicles must be picked up and returned to our Norfolk International Airport (ORF) location to ensure availability for the next guest.
🛻 Vehicles & Fleet
What vehicles do you offer?
We offer three options: Jeep Wranglers (seats 5), Jeep Gladiators (seats 5 — with the added bonus of an open truck bed for gear), and full-size 4WD SUVs (seats up to 8 adults). All are fully set up for beach driving with passes included.
What’s the difference between the Wrangler and the Gladiator?
Both seat 5 passengers and share the same legendary Jeep 4×4 capability. The Gladiator adds a pickup truck bed — great for hauling extra gear, kayaks, beach chairs, or a cooler without filling the cabin. If you want open-air Jeep capability plus serious cargo space, the Gladiator is the pick.
Are the vehicles automatic or manual?
All of our vehicles are automatic transmission.
Can I drive on regular roads?
Yes — all of our vehicles are registered street vehicles and fully capable on pavement. You’ll drive from the airport on regular roads before heading to the beach.
How do I engage 4WD?
On our Jeeps, 4WD is engaged by pulling the short transfer case shifter straight back. Our larger SUVs have a 4WD selector button on the dash. We recommend using 4WD low anytime you’re on soft sand. We’ll walk you through it at pickup.
🏖️ Beach Driving
Do I need to buy my own beach driving permits?
No. All rentals include beach driving and parking passes for both Corolla and Cape Hatteras National Seashore — already covered in your flat rate.
Are your vehicles actually allowed to drive on the sand?
Yes, absolutely. Our entire fleet is specifically optimized, maintained, and fully permitted for the deep soft sand of the Outer Banks beaches. Standard rental cars from major agencies are strictly prohibited from beach driving.
What tire pressure should I use on the beach?
We recommend airing down to 18–20 PSI for soft sand to increase traction and reduce sinking. Every rental includes a rapid tire deflator and a heavy-duty air compressor so you can air back up to ~32 PSI before returning to paved roads.
Can I drive on OBX beaches besides Carova?
Yes. Your 4WD is capable on any permitted beach. Cape Hatteras National Seashore requires its own pass (included in your rental). Other municipalities like Nags Head or Kill Devil Hills require locally purchased permits. Always check current local regulations.
Are there tide restrictions?
There are no official restrictions, but it is highly recommended to drive near low tide when the sand is hard-packed. Never drive in the wet salt wash where waves run up the beach — it causes severe vehicle damage.
What happens if I get stuck in the sand?
Don’t spin your tires — it only digs you deeper. Use the included kinetic recovery strap and recovery points, lower your PSI a bit more, and try reversing slowly. Fellow beach drivers are almost always happy to give a tow. If you need professional recovery, contact us at (252) 564-4218 and we’ll advise. Note that the renter is responsible for any professional towing fees.
Can I take the Jeep on the car ferry to Ocracoke?
Yes! The Cape Hatteras beach driving pass included with your rental covers Ocracoke Island, so you can take your Jeep on the ferry and explore.
Where are the wild horses?
The wild Colonial Spanish Mustangs roam the 4×4 beaches of Carova, approximately 30–40 minutes north of the Corolla 4WD access ramp. We provide safety information about wildlife to help you observe them responsibly.
Is night driving allowed on the beach?
Night driving rules vary by location. It is generally permitted in Carova but check current seasonal regulations before driving after dark.
🛡️ Insurance
What are the insurance requirements?
All renters must provide proof of a full-coverage personal auto insurance policy (comprehensive and collision) that extends to rental vehicles. You’ll upload your insurance card during digital check-in before pickup. No exceptions.
Do I need to buy extra insurance from you?
No. We do not sell in-house insurance. Your personal full-coverage policy is what we require.
Does credit card insurance cover this rental?
No. Credit card coverage typically excludes off-road use, sand driving, and many vehicle types including Jeeps and SUVs. You need a personal auto policy that extends to rental vehicles.
What if I don’t have full coverage insurance?
You’ll need to purchase a rental insurance policy before your reservation. Options include non-owner auto policies or short-term standalone rental car insurance. Contact your insurance agent or search online for coverage that includes off-road use.
Who is responsible for damage?
The renter is fully responsible for any damage to the vehicle during the rental period, including the insurance deductible.
🚗 Airport Pickup
How does the airport pickup process work?
Our pickup is 100% contactless. Your vehicle will be waiting in the Norfolk International Airport (ORF) parking garage. After completing digital check-in, you’ll receive the exact garage location and a digital key code. No lines, no counter — go straight from baggage claim to your waiting 4WD.
Where exactly do I pick up the vehicle?
Your vehicle will be in the parking garage at Norfolk International Airport, 2200 Norview Ave, Norfolk, VA 23518, right next to baggage claim.
What if my flight is delayed?
Your vehicle waits in the parking garage — no counter to close, no staff to miss. It will be there when you arrive. Call (252) 564-4218 with any concerns.
🐾 Pet Policy
Are your vehicles pet-friendly?
Yes! Pets are welcome at no extra charge. We ask that you bring a blanket or seat cover for your furry co-pilot and ensure they’re secure during driving.
What are the leash laws at OBX beaches?
Rules vary by town. Carova and Duck allow dogs off-leash under voice control. Kitty Hawk requires a leash (12 ft max) during summer. Nags Head requires a leash (10 ft) year-round. Kill Devil Hills bans dogs on the beach from 9 AM–6 PM between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
⛽ Fuel & Return
What is the fuel policy?
Your vehicle will be provided with a full tank of gas. Return it with a full tank by your scheduled drop-off time. Vehicles returned without a full tank will be charged for the missing fuel at a premium rate.
What do I do when I return the vehicle?
Return to Norfolk Airport at 2200 Norview Ave, Norfolk, VA 23518. Park in the designated return spot in the garage and follow the digital check-out instructions sent before your trip ends.
🐴 Carova Beach & Wild Horses
What is Carova Beach?
Carova Beach is the northernmost community on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, situated just south of the Virginia state line. The name Carova is a portmanteau of Carolina and Virginia. It is completely off the grid — there are no paved roads. The only access is by driving directly on the beach.
Do I need a 4WD to get to Carova?
Yes, absolutely. There are no paved roads to or within Carova — 4WD is required. Our Jeeps are specifically equipped to handle the deep, soft sand of the northern beaches.
Can I see wild horses?
Yes! Carova Beach is famous for the wild Spanish mustangs that roam freely. We provide safety information about wildlife to help you observe them responsibly from a safe distance (50 feet minimum, by NC law).
Is there anything commercial at Carova Beach?
No. Carova has no paved roads, no commercial businesses, and no crowds — just miles of open sand, ocean breezes, and wild horses. Make sure to bring anything you might need before heading up.

What is the closest airport to the Outer Banks?

ORF is serviced by American, Delta, United, Southwest, Breeze Airways, Frontier, and Allegiant with direct flights from major hubs across the US.

🗓️ Trip Planning & Logistics
What day of the week can I pick up the Jeep?
Pickup is flexible to match your flight and your beach house check-in. Vacation rental homes on the Outer Banks now use a variety of check-in days, so we work around your arrival and departure flights — pickup any day at ORF, return 7 days later. Whether you land on a Saturday, Sunday, or midweek, your Jeep is ready when you are.
How is ORF Jeep Rental different from Enterprise, Hertz, or other rental car counters at Norfolk Airport?
Three big differences. First, our vehicles are actually permitted for beach driving on the Outer Banks — every traditional rental contract from Enterprise, Hertz, Avis, and other major agencies prohibits driving on sand and voids your insurance the moment you hit the beach. Second, our flat $1,338/week rate already includes Currituck and Cape Hatteras beach passes, recovery gear, and an air compressor — items you cannot get from a traditional counter. Third, our pickup is contactless: we deliver the Jeep to the parking garage so you walk straight from baggage claim to your vehicle, no rental counter line.
Can I drive on the beach in Corolla or Carova with a regular rental car from ORF?
No. Standard rental cars and most AWD crossovers will get stuck in the soft sand of the Currituck and Carova 4×4 beaches, often within minutes. More importantly, every major rental agency at Norfolk International prohibits beach driving in their contracts — driving on sand voids your insurance and makes you liable for any damage or recovery costs. ORF Jeep Rental vehicles are specifically permitted, equipped, and insured for OBX beach driving.
What happens if my flight to ORF is delayed or arrives late at night?
Your Jeep waits in the Norfolk Airport parking garage with a digital key code — there is no rental counter to close and no staff to miss. Whether you land at 10 AM or 11 PM, you walk to your assigned spot, retrieve the vehicle, and drive to the Outer Banks on your schedule. If you have any concerns during a delay, call us at (252) 564-4218.
Can I take my ORF Jeep rental down to Hatteras Island or Ocracoke?
Yes. Your Cape Hatteras National Seashore ORV pass (included with every rental) covers beach driving on Hatteras Island and Ocracoke. Hatteras is roughly 140 miles from ORF (about 3 to 3.5 hours), and Ocracoke is 170+ miles including the ferry crossing from Hatteras Village. The car ferry to Ocracoke accepts our Jeeps without issue.
How far is Norfolk Airport from each Outer Banks town?
From Norfolk International (ORF): Kitty Hawk is 80 miles (1.5–2 hours), Kill Devil Hills is 82 miles (1.5–2 hours), Nags Head is 85 miles (1.75–2 hours), Duck is 85 miles (2 hours), Corolla is 90 miles (2–2.5 hours), Carova 4×4 beach is 95 miles (2–2.5 hours, 4WD required for the final stretch), Manteo is 95 miles (2–2.25 hours), Hatteras Island reaches Buxton at 140 miles (3–3.5 hours), and Ocracoke is 170+ miles including the ferry (5+ hours total).
Why do I need to provide my own full-coverage auto insurance?
Outer Banks beach driving falls outside the coverage limits of most credit card rental insurance and many basic auto policies — they exclude off-road use, sand driving, and recovery costs. We require renters to carry their own full-coverage personal auto policy (comprehensive plus collision) that explicitly extends to rental vehicles, ensuring you are properly protected for soft-sand driving, salt exposure, and any beach recovery scenario. If your current policy does not include rental coverage, your insurance agent can usually add it temporarily or you can buy short-term standalone rental insurance before your trip.
