Closest Airport to Duck, NC

The closest airport to Duck, NC is Norfolk International Airport (ORF) in Norfolk, Virginia: about 82 miles to the middle of town and 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours by car. Nothing with airline service is closer. Duck has no airport of its own. The nearest runway, Pine Island, just north of town, is a private strip that needs the owner’s written permission to land, and every other commercial airport is at least half an hour farther away than Norfolk.

Norfolk (ORF) to Duck: the route and the drive time

From the airport, take I-64 east to VA 168 south, the Chesapeake Expressway, which is a toll road. On the North Carolina side it becomes Highway 168 and runs down the Currituck mainland into US 158, which crosses Currituck Sound on the Wright Memorial Bridge into Kitty Hawk. Stay on US 158 to the stoplight at North Carolina Highway 12 and turn left. Duck is about 5 miles north, past Southern Shores; in town, Highway 12 is Duck Road. The drive is about 82 miles to the middle of town, a few miles more or less depending on which end of Duck you are staying in.

Two things slow the last stretch. GPS apps like to send Duck traffic through Southern Shores on the side streets; ignore them and stay on US 158 to the Highway 12 light, because that shortcut can add time rather than save it. And summer Saturday check-in traffic backs up the bridge and Highway 12 through Duck, so give yourself extra time if you land that day.

Flying in with ORF Jeep Rental

With an ORF Jeep Rental the drive works a little differently. A transfer vehicle waits in the Norfolk airport garage with the keys inside. Take it straight to your house in Duck and keep it as long as you like. When it suits you, bring it to our Kill Devil Hills lot at 2101 Colington Rd, which shares a driveway with U-Haul, about 13 miles and 25 minutes south of Duck, and swap into your 4x4. It is handed over in person, any day from 7 AM to 8 PM. At the end of the week it runs in reverse: the 4x4 back to the lot, the transfer vehicle back to the ORF garage.

If you would rather swap on the way in, the lot is about 84 miles from the airport, roughly 1 hour 45 minutes, and Duck is 25 minutes beyond it. Either way you arrive at the house in your own vehicle, with no shuttle to wait for and no counter line.

Pine Island is the closest runway to Duck, but it is a privately owned 3,450-foot strip in the Pine Island community between Duck and Corolla, and landing takes the owner’s written permission. The nearest public runway is First Flight, the 3,000-foot National Park Service strip at the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills: daylight hours only, no fuel, and tie-downs limited to 24 hours at a stretch. Currituck County Regional in Maple looks closest of all on a map, but the Mid-Currituck Bridge has not been built, so the drive loops south to the Wright Memorial Bridge and back up Highway 12. If you are flying yourself in, our guide to the Outer Banks general-aviation strips covers the public ones.

Norfolk or a bigger airport?

Fly into Norfolk unless the fare gap is large. Richmond and New Bern add more than an hour each way, and Raleigh-Durham more than doubles the drive, which you pay twice, out and back. Newport News is the closest alternative but has few flights. Norfolk is served by seven airlines, with nonstops to more than 40 airports; the current airlines and nonstops are on our flights to Norfolk (ORF) page.

Do you need a 4x4 in Duck?

Not for Duck itself. Duck Road is paved end to end, everything in town is on it, and any car will do. The town also keeps vehicles off its own beach from March 16 through November 30. The rest of the year its town code admits only registered vehicles “having a four wheel drive,” and only through private accesses; there are no public vehicle accesses in Duck.

The 4x4 is for what is up the road. Highway 12 ends at a ramp north of Corolla, about 19 miles and 40 minutes from the middle of Duck (longer in summer), and the 4x4-only beach past that ramp is where the Corolla wild horses live and where Carova’s houses are. No permit is needed to drive it, but Currituck County requires a beach parking permit to park on the sand from the second Saturday of May through the last Saturday of September; ours is on the vehicle. The county’s beach driving rules leave no room on the 4WD question: “If your vehicle is not equipped with 4-wheel drive, do not attempt to drive on the beach.” For the beach itself, see where to see the Corolla wild horses and our Carova Beach access guide; for the town, things to do in Duck.
